These individuals are selfless, putting the welfare of others first, but once they return home from active duty, they are uncertain of how to assimilate back into civilian life.

To help our heroes find fulfilling roles in society that capitalizes on their military training Helmets to Hardhats partners with retired and transitioning military to find quality careers in the construction industry. Helmets to Hardhats started in 2002 and is a nonprofit organization designed to help military members successfully transition back into civilian life. The Center for Military Recruitment, Assessment, and Veterans Employment runs the program from Washington D.C. In 2007, the program joined with “Wounded Warriors” project, which connects disabled veterans to careers that support the construction industry. It’s not a placement company; the company refers candidates to promising career providers and vice versa. Veterans receive free training and need zero experience prior to starting the program. Some of the most successful candidates are individuals with no previous knowledge of their chosen field.

All participating organizations conduct three- to five-year learning programs that teach service members all the tricks of the construction trade with a specialization in a particular area. Also, since apprenticeships are regulated and approved at the federal and state level, veterans can supplement their income with their Montgomery G.I. Bill benefits.
