COVID-19 Impact Update: Labor Day Activity Dip Then Resurgence
October 8th, 2020
OxBlue, a leader in construction camera services, continues to use its artificial intelligence (AI) tools to measure construction activity levels on projects across the United States amidst the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The full analysis monitors construction projects across all 50 states and more than 100 metropolitan areas between March 1st, 2020, and October 8th, 2020.
Since our last update, construction activity across the United States remains strong, and the only dip in activity present was on Labor Day weekend – meaning the construction industry took a well-deserved day off. Unlike previous holidays, which we excluded from our activity data, we included Labor Day in order to give a deeper understanding of how construction workers are responding to potential vacation time. This is one of the largest unanimous activity dips since the pandemic began in March, according to OxBlue’s data.
On a national level, construction activity is the highest it’s been since the pandemic began.
States experiencing large upticks in activity post-Labor Day include California, Colorado, Michigan and New York.
OxBlue will share regular updates on how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the construction industry and on the technology being developed to combat the spread of the virus.

Notes: The time period in this analysis includes the 155 workdays (weekdays excluding holidays) from March 1, 2020, to October 8, 2020. The OxBlue Construction Activity Index is a 5-day moving average. The current baseline for the OxBlue Activity Index is the average activity level for the workdays from March 2 to March 19, the date Pennsylvania issued its strict shelter-in-place order. The data analyzed is from commercial construction projects and excludes single-family residential construction. States with low levels of construction activity and without statistically significant data have been excluded for accuracy. National construction activity is based on a weighted average of the construction volume for each state.
