Fortera - Challenge

The Challenge

Remote monitoring of a complex construction project

Cement production has, historically, produced an enormous amount of CO2, accounting for as much as 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Fortera developed new technology that can be added to existing cement production plants to reduce 70% of emissions in cement production over traditional methods.

In a global first, Fortera built an industrial green cement and carbon mineralization facility that permanently sequesters C02.

As the Fortera team moved forward to break ground on the project, they wanted a way to track progress remotely, identify issues early, and share the legacy with everyone moving forward.

Fortera - Solution

The Solution

Live views and time-lapse footage from an advanced construction camera

With an OxBlue Sapphire PTZ camera, Fortera and its stakeholders could monitor and manage progress remotely, ensuring everyone stayed connected. The camera provided clear visibility by capturing four distinct angles, combining them into a seamless panoramic image of the jobsite. Its HD video and optical zoom capabilities allowed all parties to view the site live with sharp detail.

At night, motion detection added an extra layer of security, enhancing visibility and ensuring continuous monitoring.

Overall, these features helped Fortera keep an eye on the project, hold trade partners accountable, and document a perfect history of the site.

  • “We wanted to be able to have eyes on the project, not just from an engineering perspective to chart progress, but also to communicate with our investors and teams.”

    -Charlie Stevens, Plant Manager,

  • “One of our trade partners called me with a potential issue. It was easy for us to pull up the OxBlue camera, zoom in, see what was happening and find a resolution.”

    -Philip Tuet, Vice President, Engineering,

  • “If we had any kind of damage, we could actually go back through the cameras to figure out what had happened. It was very beneficial to have that documentation available.”

    -Charlie Stevens, Plant Manager,

  • “All stakeholders can still feel like they’re a part of the project because they can see the progress that's happening, pick out the things they were involved in and share in that excitement of their pieces of the plant being installed and being erected.”

    — Charlie Stevens, Plant Manager,

  • “It's one thing to say we're building a plant. It's another to actually have a time lapse video that shows progress day to day, week to week. It's quite impactful and a powerful visual tool.”

Fortera---Implementation

The Implementation

Full visibility, a complete history, and powerful marketing

Fortera used OxBlue to set up a live stream and website integration on their internal intranet so employees and specific partners could view the jobsite no matter where they were located. For safety and security, the company utilized a unique camera feature by setting a custom delay period to prevent sensitive material from being shared immediately.

The OxBlue video camera also helped the team resolve issues quickly. When a development partner had an issue with an installation, Fortera was able to zoom in while on the phone, verify the problem and get it fixed. If there was ever a question, managers could run back through the footage to see exactly what happened on site — no “he said, she said.”

The time-lapse feature not only helped with reviews but with turning progress reports into marketing promotions. In the web-app, users can create an unlimited amount of custom time-lapses, while a professional cinematic version is delivered after each project. Fortera was able to further showcase their monumental project using the impactful visual tool at conferences and during investor meetings.

Fortera - Result

The Results

A first-of-its-kind plant to make a greener world

Fortera never had to worry about missing documentation or a critical visual, thanks to OxBlue’s customer-centric approach to support. “When I’d call up OxBlue,” said plant manager Charlie Stevens, “even with something small, they were always, ‘We got you.’ OxBlue was always very helpful whenever I’d call."

Fortera opened its Redding, California plant in April 2024, where it is now powering green construction projects with its low-carbon ReAct® cement.
