The Challenge

Connecting construction partners to progress

The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is one of the best national institutions for pediatric research and health services. As part of a multi-phase initiative to transform their facilities to continue their world-class status, Nationwide Children's and Turner Construction partnered to develop Research Building 4 (RB4), spanning 290,000+ sq ft.

Nationwide Children's needed a way to remotely check in on progress, share updates with stakeholders and ensure consistent, streamlined communication with various vendors.

The Solution

Leveraging video construction cameras communication

Nationwide Children's redeployed the OxBlue camera they’d used on two prior projects, but added the extra element of live streaming. As construction began during the COVID-19 pandemic, the shift to hybrid/remote work increased the need for live jobsite monitoring. Using the camera, all stakeholders could get real-time updates on the project’s status. This helped meetings become more productive, as teams could reference the camera and image history to highlight specific actions and milestones in greater detail.

  • "We utilized the OxBlue camera system during nearly every OAC construction meeting. The construction manager would provide updates accompanied by live visual feeds on the screen. This real-time visibility was particularly impactful for monitoring exterior work, significantly enhancing our ability to assess progress and address issues promptly."

-Kevin Noble, Senior Project Manager, Engineering Services, Nationwide Children's Hospital

  • “A picture is always going to be worth a thousand words so having the camera truly helps ensure everyone stays in close communication and with an understanding of current status. Seeing the work is more valuable than describing it.”

-Kevin Noble, Senior Project Manager, Engineering Services, Nationwide Children's Hospital

  • “The camera worked for multiple teams. Our construction partners, internal design teams, select vendors … they had easy access to the site and helped with overall accountability.”

NHC Research Building-Implementation

The Implementation

Using time-lapses and images for multiple purposes

The time-lapse and video features in the OxBlue web-app served multiple purposes: managing and marketing the project. With unlimited users, Nationwide Children's could add various vendors and partners as needed. From there, construction teams could monitor their own activity, track materials and add an additional layer of security after-hours with the 24/7 camera. Having the site recorded made it easier to manage communications.

While the construction teams leveraged the cameras for day-to-day insight, Nationwide Children's marketing team was able to use the same images for promotional content. Each project includes a professional OxBlue time-lapse after completion, which the marketing team used for the building’s opening ceremony.

The Results

Advancing best practices for pediatric medicine

The new six-story, 290k+ sq ft research facility with Wet and Dry biomedical spaces, is a shining achievement for Nationwide Children's and Turner Construction. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Nationwide Children's maintained strong, open communication channels with all stakeholders. The valuable documentation provided by the OxBlue construction camera helped facilitate understanding of site progress, challenges and resolutions. Ultimately, using images as a shared source of unbiased information, supported transparency, accountability and collective knowledge.
